The Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for Aral Sea Basin (CAMP4ASB) hosted a two-week workshop on hydrological modeling in Almaty from June 25 to July 6. The hydrological modelling workshop gathered specialists from hydrometeorological agencies, research and academic institutions of Central Asian countries, and national experts of the PEER project. The workshop is an integral part of the training activities led by the CAMP4ASB project for capacity building in the region on climate projections, modelling hydrology responses, and impacts assessment on key sectors and ecosystems.
The program of the workshop consisted of such topics as introduction to hydrological modeling, study of SWIM model, preparation of input and output data, development of climate scenarios and analysis of results. During the first module of the workshop, the participants studied the hydrological model of the Isfara basin (transboundary river Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan), and then proceeded to practical exercises where hydrological modeling methods were applied by the participants on the pilot regions selected in each country.
As a result of integrated training and acquired skills, it is expected that specialists will develop long-term forecasts of climate change impact in the pilot river basins. Expert support for the training program is provided by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). PIK experts will continue their assistance to local stakeholders in these Central Asian for assessment of hydrological responses to climate change on the targeted pilot basins. The prospective findings of these assessments would allow identify priority adaptation measures.
